Homework for September 4 and 5:
Please check your child's homework folder and agenda. Read and sign any papers that need to be returned. Also, if you haven't already done so, please check the supply list and send those supplies in with your child as soon as possible. Having the proper supplies helps us to get organized much more efficiently!
Your child will be bringing home a daily behavior report card. Please sign it each night and return it in your child's homework folder.
Your child will bring home a "Friday Folder" every Friday. Please clean it out over the weekend and send it back with only the signed behavior report card.
I will start to assign homework on September 8. Usually homework will be a combination of math and reading. More details about my homework policies and expectations will be sent home next week.
Why do we give homework?
Homework is an important part of your child's educational experience. It reinforces skills and concepts introduced in class and improves organizational and time management skills.
What will the homework be like and how much will be given?
Your child will typically have homework Monday-Thursday each week. This homework will likely be a combination of math and reading, although study guides for science and social studies tests will also be sent home occasionally. Homework should take about 30 minutes. The specific amount of homework and time involved will vary depending on the age and skill level of individual students. All assignments will be written in the agenda book each day.
What are the homework expectations and policies?
1. Homework should be completed neatly, in pencil and returned the next day.
2. If an assignment is not completed, I will send a reminder in the agenda book for that assignment to be returned the next day. All assignments must be made up before Friday. Assignments that are still missing on Friday will be made up during free time. Chronic homework problems will result in a parent contact so that we can work on an improvement plan.
3. Agenda books should be signed each night. These are the primary places for me to communicate with you. I also check agenda books each morning, so you can write questions/comments to me in there.
4. When your child brings home a book for reading homework, a parent must sign the reading log to show that the reading has been completed. The date and book title must also be filled in by the parent or student. Your child will not receive credit for homework unless the reading log is signed.
How can I help my child with homework?
1. Help your child to decide on a good time to complete homework. For some children, it is best to complete homework right after school. For others, it is best to take a break and complete homework after dinner.
2. Help your child to find a quiet spot where he/she can work undisturbed. Make it a policy in your home that homework time is quiet time (no television, video games etc.)
3. It is okay to check your child's work and to help him/her fix mistakes. Homework is a learning experience. Please let me know if you find the amount or level of homework to be too difficult or too easy.
